David Kvancz is the Chief Pharmacy Officer at the Cleveland Clinic (CC) in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland Clinic is a staff physician practice model employing over 1,800 staff physicians and consists of a 1,350 bed tertiary care referral hospital, main campus clinics and Cancer Center, 11 Family Health Centers and 4 Ambulatory Surgery Centers within the Cleveland area. Approximately 54,000 inpatient admissions and 3 million outpatient visits occur annually at CC. The Department of Pharmacy consists of 320 FTEs who support all aspects of the department's operations and services, including 10 outpatient pharmacies. In addition, David has responsibility for coordinating key pharmacy initiatives among the Directors of Pharmacy and Clinical Coordinators of the Cleveland Clinic Health System (CCHS), which consists of 10 community hospitals owned by the Cleveland Clinic, and the Cleveland Clinic Florida hospital and clinics in Weston, Florida. During the past year, David has been leading the physical facility and operational workflow designs for the Pharmacy Department at the new Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirate, scheduled to open in 2010.
David received a BS in pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy and did an internship at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, New York. He received his MS in Hospital Pharmacy from The Ohio State University and completed an ASHP-accredited residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to his current position, David served as the Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona, and the Associate Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
David has served as a member and chairman of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) Practice Managers Section, as a member and co-chair of the Organizational Affairs and Professional Affairs Councils, and as a member of the ASHP and Georgetown University Center for Health System Pharmacy Leadership Development Advisory Committee. David has also served as the President of the Arizona Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Southern Arizona Chapter, and as Organizational Affairs Director of the Ohio Society of Health System Pharmacists. He holds a Clinical Assistant Professor title at the Ohio State College of Pharmacy and is a member of the Dean's Advisory Council at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy. David has served as a member of VHA, UHC and Premier group purchasing committees, including chairman of the National Pharmacy Executive and Advisory Committees for Premier. David has had several publications in professional journals and has delivered numerous presentations at local, state and national meetings.
In 2005, David was recognized as the John W. Webb Visiting Professor for Excellence in Health System Pharmacy by the Northeastern University School of Pharmacy, Boston Massachusetts. He also received the Jack L. Beal Post-Baccalaureate Alumni Award from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy that same year. In 2002, David was a member of the CC Pharmacy team that received the ASHP Foundation's Achievement in the Professional Practice of Pharmacy in Health Systems Award for the development and justification of a staff pharmacist clinical practice model, which also received Abbott Laboratories 1st Place National Hospital Pharmacy Quality Award in 2000. David was recognized as a Fellow of ASHP in 1996, and was named the AzSHP Hospital Pharmacist of the Year in 1990.
David and his wife Denise reside in Strongsville, Ohio; Denise works part time for a private physical therapy practice. Their oldest son Matt graduated from Georgia Tech and is a consultant software engineer in Atlanta, Ga. Tim, residing in Tucson, AZ, recently received his associates degree in liberal arts and is currently enrolled in nursing school while working as a patient care technician at Northwest Hospital. Melissa recently moved to Charlotte, NC after graduating from Baldwin Wallace College this past spring and is pursing another position within healthcare having successfully established the business office for a new private physical therapy practice in Richfield, Ohio.
