Karl Kappeler

Karl H. Kappeler, M.S., R.Ph., FASHP
After completing a BA in Biology from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, Karl received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Louisiana - Monroe, and then served as the night shift pharmacist for one year at the OSU Medical Center. Upon completion of the combined MS and Residency in Hospital Pharmacy Administration at OSU in 1991, Karl served as a Manager at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston for two years and then as an Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Duke University Medical Center for six years.

Karl now proudly serves in his 15th year at Nationwide Children's in Columbus as Chief Pharmacy Officer. He works with an excellent pharmacy staff and a high-achieving hospital leadership team. As CPO, Karl leads medication use systems within the 450-bed free-standing children's hospital, in over 50 clinics and in three (soon to be six) off-site neonatal intensive care units in Columbus area hospitals. Karl's team serves inpatients through a mixed practice model and employs several ambulatory clinical pharmacists serving asthma, HIV, and primary care patients, among others. Karl's team supports three residency programs: PGY2 Residency in Pediatrics, PGY1 Residency in Community Care, and MS/PGY1/PGY2 Residency in Health-System Pharmacy. Karl was also fortunate to have developed a pharmacy residency program for Saudi pharmacists while at Duke.

Karl serves as the Administrator for the Central Ohio Poison Center on Children's campus. Karl is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the OSU College of Pharmacy, teaching graduate classes in pediatric pharmacy management, emergency preparedness, and return on investment. Karl has earned 3 grants as Principal Investigator in the area of pediatric health literacy, he and his team developed a visual health literacy system called MediglyphsTM. While at Children's, Karl completed the GSK Executive Management Program for Pharmacy Leaders at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and the Advanced Training Program in Health Care Delivery Improvement at Intermountain Healthcare in 2010. In 2002, Karl was nominated by his staff and chosen by Hospital Administration as Nationwide Children's Hospital Manager of the Year.

Professionally, Karl serves as Vice Chair of the ASHP Council for Pharmacy Management, and OSHP in the Organizational Affairs Division and PPMI Task Force. Karl just completed a two-year post as Chair of the Pharmacy Directors in the Children's Hospital Association, a collaborative of over 40 leading free-standing children's hospitals.

In the community, Karl serves as Chair of the Pharmaceutical Subcommittee of the Columbus and Metropolitan Medical Response Systems, leading pharmaceutical readiness in central Ohio. He is immediate Past-Chair of the Business Advisory Council to Dublin School System and serves as an Elder in his church. He is married to Michele with two sons, Joel and Ben, and a daughter Brooke.
